GOC376870 - Consulting - Pond and Landscape Upgrade

The pond, pond area and irrigation system require upgrade.  Planning to include exploration of options, requirements and process required for naturalizing the pond and converting the sod areas to native grasses.  All existing landscape to be evaluated.  This will include a condition assessment of the existing irrigation system in the pond (not currently in use, the pond bed/contents (is dredging required?), recommendations for required plantings and a maintenance plan for additional work and/or maintenance required for the life of the pond.  Scope to include but not limited to:  Perform environmental testing of the soil and material at the bottom of the pond; Perform a complete dredging of the pond and sweep of the pond for garbage and debris from the bottom.  Waste material may be toxic and should be disposed of in a safe way.  This would need to be determined from the testing above; Install new aeration system for the pond and a new irrigation system for the entire site; Investigate planting of aquatic weeds around the pond with the aim to reduce algae growth and deter geese.  Geese may not approach the pond if it is covered in high reeds as a natural defense mechanism.  If they cannot see predators they may avoid the area; High level option to be considered to remediate the pond area, backfill, level with surrounding area and re-sod.  This would also need to include the removal and complete decommissioning of the aeration system.  This would completely eliminate the pond and return the area to a natural grass landscape; Consultant to review trees and shrubs onsite and inventory diseased trees/shrubs that will need to be replaced.  The study should include optional pricing for a high level option to include replacement of these on this project. (Approx. 4% of trees onsite);  Approximate green landscaped area = 28,500 m2; Approximate pond area = 4,800 m2; Approximate Pond Volume = 650,000 US Gallons; P&S in 1st year and Implementation in 2nd year.
 
The pond has historically had high algae levels and has been the source of numerous visual and odor complaints.  Sustainability - Investigate environmentally friendly products.  Options to consider but not limited to:  evaluate natural alternatives to clarify the pond versus chemical treatments, including aquatic plants and aeration. For the landscape irrigation system, consider automated controls with efficient sprinkler heads to reduce water waste.   There are a number of diseased trees and shrubs that will require replacement to prevent migration of the disease to the rest of the trees.  This was recommended as an event in the 2010 BCR [00.1A-065 Soft Landscaping] to replace approximately 4% of the trees and shrubs onsite.
